Homemade Brush Roll (and How-don’t when you travel)

Hi there.
Tomorrow I’m going to Rome for some days and I thought it can be nice to show you what I’m carrying with me and, most of all, where I put my brushes. I said nice, not useful, because I think I’m the perfect example of what NOT to do when you have to stay in the 10kg limit: if my make-up bag had been smaller, I would have been able to carry with me a pair of shoes in addition to which I’m wearing during the journey…

Domani vado a Roma per qualche giorno e ho pensato potesse essere carino mostrarvi quali cosmetici porterò con me e, soprattutto, dove ho riposto i miei pennelli. Ho detto “carino” e non “utile” perché penso di essere il perfetto esempio di cosa NON fare quando si deve stare entro il limite dei 10kg: se mi fossi contenuta nella trousse, avrei potuto portarmi un paio di scarpe in più oltre a quelle con cui viaggerò!

Preliminary note: I’ve always had the tendency of over-filling my make-up bag, even when my make-up routine consisted only of moisturizer-skin toned eyeshadow-liquid eyeliner. The most interesting thing is that, as the amount of make-up to put into has increased dramatically, the make-up bag has remained the same.
Well, last year I was able to carry with me a bag for make-up only and another bag, for moisturizer, eyecream, shampoo, conditioner and other beauty related stuff… But since I started to save money on journeys and choosing low-cost flights, I entered the harsh tunnel of the hand luggage limit.
To make a long story short, any time I pack, I have to ask myself constantly: “What kind of look and how many look I’m going to do?”.
Brushes comes as a consequence to this choice.

Nota: ho sempre avuto la tendenza insopprimibile a far scoppiare la mia trousse, anche quando la mia routine make-up comprendeva unicamente crema idratante, ombretto beige e eyeliner. La cosa divertente è che nonostante mano a mano siano aumentati i prodotti, la trousse è rimasta la stessa. Oddio, lo scorso anno ho viaggiato con due trousse, una solo per i cosmetici e una per gli altri prodotti (shampoo, deodorante…)…
Da quando ho deciso di viaggiare low-cost, però, sono stata costretta ad entrare nel tremendo tunnel del limite imposto dal bagaglio a mano. Per farla breve: ogni volta che faccio la valigia devo domandarmi quali e quanti look farò. I pennelli li scelgo di conseguenza.

Here’s the list of products I put in my make-up bag. I’m going to stay in Rome five days, hosted by a friend who loves being my guinea pig for make-up experiments: that’s why I chose to carry with me more eyeshadows than I normally do.

• Herborist’s moisturizer and eye cream
• Erbolario (an Italian company) lip balm
• MAC Strobe Cream (in a tiny jar)
• MUFE HD Foundation (the full tube. I’d have liked to pour some in a small container, but it had been impossibile)
• MUFE cream concealers palette
• MUFE HD powder (in its jar: I don’t want to risk they think it’s ANOTHER THING)
• MAC Prim and Proper blush (a shade which fits all)
• Urban Decay Primer Potion
• a MAC self-composed quad with Brule, Mystery (my basic shades), Satellite Dreams and Plumage
• Sugarpill Sweetheart Palette (which contains a white, a neon pink, a bright light blue and a green)
• single eyeshadows: NYX Black, Sugarpill Buttercupcake (yellow) and Poison Plum, Urban Decay Toasted
• a sample of MAC Old Gold pigment
• MAC Blacktrack (gel eyeliner)
• three pencil eyeliners: purple (MAC Purple Dash), blue (NYX Sapphire), black (Collistar kajal) + MAC Chromagraphic (NW20/NC15)
• MUFE Smoky Lash mascara

Questa la lista dei prodotti che ho messo nel mio astuccio del trucco. Starò a Roma per cinque giorni, ospite di un’amica che adora farsi truccare e farmi da cavia, ed è per questo che porto più ombretti di quanti ne porterei normalmente (oddio, non sempre è vero, ma generalmente sì).

• balsamo labbra ai quattro burri di Erbolario (nuovo, devo testarlo)

• Fondotinta HD MUFE (l’intero tubo, non sono riuscita a travasarlo purtroppo)

• cipria HD MUFE (nella sua jar, spero così di evitare il rischio che risulti sospetta…)
• blush Prim and Proper MAC (un colore che sta bene con tutto o quasi)

• un quad di MAC da me composto con Brule, Mystery (i miei colori mai-senza), Satellite Dreams (poteva mancare?) e Plumage
• Sweetheart Palette di Sugarpill (di cui parlerò. contiene un bianco, un rosa neon, un azzurro e un verde chiaro accesi, tutti matte o quasi)
• ombretti singoli: nero di NYX, Buttercupcake (giallo matte) e Poison Plum (viola matte) di Sugarpill, Toasted di Urban Decay
• un sampke del pigmento Old Gold di MAC
• MAC Blacktrack (eyeliner in gel)
• tre matite per occhi: viola (Purple Dash di MAC), blu (Sapphire di NYX), nera (kajal di Collistar) + MAC Chromagraphic (NW20/NC15)
• mascara Smoky Lash di MUFE

In add to this there’s my brush-teeth, a mini-sized bottle of my shampoo, deodorant, eye make-up remover (I have sensitive eyes and I have to use a specific one), daily contact lenses. Oh, and yes, some hairgrips.

Ci sono inoltre: spazzolino da viaggio, una mini bottiglietta in cui ho travasato lo shampoo, deodorante, struccante per occhi (ho gli occhi sensibili e devo usarne uno specifico, ve ne parlerò), lenti a contatto giornaliere. Ah, e delle mollettine per capelli.

And here’s the my brush roll! I’m very proud of it, I chose the tissue and my mother sew it.
We take inspiration from this tutorial, but my mother used a differend sewing technique in order to make the seams more resistant. I’m not able to explain it technically (sewing is not my cup of tea…), but I rely on my mother’ skills.

Ed ecco qui il mio brush roll! Ne sono molto orgogliosa: ho scelto colore e stampa del tessuto e mia madre l’ha cucito a macchina.
Per realizzarlo abbiamo preso ispirazione da questo tutorial, ma mia madre ha adottato una tecnica di cucito diversa per rendere le cuciture più resistenti. Non sono in grado di spiegarvela, dato io e il cucito siamo due rette parallele, ma mi fido delle capacità di mia madre.

Colour Stories 1 – It’s raining Purples

Since the early days of my cosmetic journey, I’ve totally loved purples. I like wearing purple, maybe because it’s very close to black, and I love putting purples on my eyes, in order to turn them green.
I have a special weakness for blue-based violet, and my collection will confirm it, but I like any shade of purple, from the warmest to the coolest ones, so I’m going to fill this gap, sooner or later.
Here is my collection of purples at the moment. My aim is to update it periodically, as for all the “colour stories” series, so stay tuned.

Fin dagli inizi della mia avventura cosmetica ho sempre amato i viola. Mi piace vestirmi di viola, forse perché è un colore molto vicino al nero, e amo truccarmi gli occhi di viola, così che appaiano verdi.
Ho un vero e proprio debole per i viola freddi, e la mia collezione ne sarà conferma, ma mi piace qualsiasi punto di viola, dal più caldo al più freddo, e sicuramente colmerò questo vuoto prima o poi!
Questa la mia collezione di viola, al momento. E’ mia intenzione aggiornarla periodicamente, così come intendo fare per tutte la serie “Colour stories”: seguitemi e vedrete.

All swatches are made on my bare skin: I applied the products dry, because it’s the way I normally use them. If you like to see some of them wet, write it me in a comment.

Tutti gli swatches sono stati fatti sulla mia pelle asciutta e priva di primer. Nessun ombretto è stato applicato bagnato perché tendenzialmente li uso asciutti: se vi interessa vedere la resa di alcuni di essi bagnato, scrivetemelo in un commento. Le descrizioni in italiano le ho messe tutte in fondo al post, spero non vi dia noia ma non volevo mettere troppo testo fra un’immagine e l’altra.

MAC shimmer purples:

Parfait Amour (Frost) is a shimmery lilac. Satellite Dreams (Veluxe Pearl) is an intense plum with violet reflects. Young Punk (Mineralize) was released as Limited Edition with Style Black Collection (October 2009) and it is a black with many violet sparkles. It’s very similar to Beauty Marked eyeshadow, but I find there are more sparkles (and they seem me bigger) and the overall effect is colder.

Mattes

Violet Trance (MAC Cosmetics) is a bluish violet which came out with Make-Up Art Cosmetics Collection last Fall and it’s a Limited Edition. As you can see, it lacks of pigmentation, and for this swatch i put three times the amount of colour I put for all the others. It’s a shame, because the shade is very intersting.
Indian Ink (MAC Cosmetics) is a very deep eggplant. Quite soft and blendable, it pairs perfectly with all the light purples I have. It’s a PRO shade, so you can’t find it in all stores and counters.
Poison Plum (Sugarpill Cosmetics) is a true, vibrant purple. It’s very pigmented and soft and, according to the few tests I did, it blends pretty well. The only flaw I individuated at the moment is that it tends to stain skin, so a primer or a good eyebase is required, even if it has an excellent pay-off by its own. I will dedicate an entire post to Sugarpill eyeshadows when I test them enough.

Purples from Sleek Palettes:

As all the owners of at least one Sleek palette know, the pigmentation and the softness of these colours are gorgeous. The purple from The Original Palette is a cooler (but not bluish) and lighter version of MAC Satellite Dreams. The two from Graphite Palette (it was a Limited Edition) are respectivetely an intense violet and a shiny purple on a black base -even if in this swatch it seems blue, believe me it’s purple!-.

Minerals Will Work 4 U – Loose Eyeshadow #030

This mineral loose eyeshadow by Minerals Will Work 4 U is a stunning deep blue-violet that becomes a more stunning dark icy blue when applied on a black base (I used MAC Fluidline in Blacktrack for this swatch). Not an easy colour to wear, if you aren’t accostumed to soft shades, but a lovely choice if you have a dark soul, or simply you aren’t afraid to dare on your eyes.

That’s all for now. It’s a small collection but I love any single shade of it, with the exception of MAC Violet Trance (and you saw why). If I have to suggest you two to buy I’ll pick Satellite Dreams and Indian Ink by MAC, but it’s my very personal choice. I know Satellite Dreams is not so famous as Parfait Amour, but I find that the first, being in the middle from warm to cool shades, suits better more skin types and eye colours than the other.
A compromise between them, and a great economic alternative is buying The Original Palette from Sleek: i think the purple of this palette is the ideal son of Satellite Dreams and Parfait Amour. In adding to this, for a far lower price than a single MAC eyeshadow (as in pan as in mono format) you’ll get 11 more beautiful shades to play with. In waiting of my Sleek review, here’s the swatches of The Original Palette.
For dark shade, I chose Indian Ink, even if I know there’s a wonderful matte purple by Make Up For Ever which I’m already interested in. At the moment I haven’t it, so Indian Ink is the winner because, as I said above, it matches perfectly with all the purples I have.

1. MAC shimmers
Parfait Amour (frost) è un lilla shimmer, tendente all’azzurro. Satellite Dreams (Veluxe Pearl) è un color prugna intenso, con riflessi violetti. Young Punk (Mineralize) è un’Edizione Limitata uscita con la collezione Style Black lo scorso ottobre. Si tratta di un nero con al di sopra moltissimi glitterini viola/fucsia, che ricorda molto l’ombretto Beauty Marked, anche se a parer mio Young Punk contiene un maggior numero di glitter (e leggermente più grandi) e risulta più freddo.

2. Vari Opachi
Violet Trance (MAC Cosmetics) è un blu-viola uscito con la collezione Make Up Art Cosmetics lo scorso autunno ed era un’Edizione Limitata. E menomale direi, perché come potete vedere voi stesse è una vera sòla. Tanto bello nel pan quanto praticamente inutilizzabile: per fare lo swatch ho usato tre volte la quantità di prodotto che ho utilizzato per gli altri due!
Indian Ink (MAC Cosmetics) è un color melanzana molto scuro. Piuttosto morbido e abbastanza facilmente sfumabile, guadagna mille punti per il fatto di essere abbinabile a tutti i viola che posseggo. E’ un colore PRO, quindi non lo trovate nei negozi MAC normali e nei counter.
Poison Plum (Sugarpill Cosmetics) , dovrebbe essere IL purple. Molto vivace, ben pigmentato, texture morbida e, a quanto sembrerebbe dalle poche prove che ho fatto, si sfuma piuttosto bene. Unico difetto: macchia la pelle, è quindi necessario l’uso di un primer o di una qualsiasi base per evitare spiacevoli inconvenienti, anche se il colore di per se scrive benissimo. Non appena avrò effettuato sufficienti test farò una recensione completa degli ombretti Sugarpill.

Viola dalle palette Sleek
Come tutti i felici proprietari di palette Sleek sapranno, la pigmentazione e la texture di questi ombretti è favolosa. Il viola della palette The Original è una versione più fredda, ma non tendente al blu, di Satellite Dreams. I due della Graphite (ricordo, Edizione Limitata ormai introvabile se non su ebay a prezzi assurdi) sono rispettivamente un violetto molto intenso e un viola metallizzato su base nera, anche se dallo swatch sembra quasi blu.

Minerals Will Work 4 U – Ombretto minerale #030
L‘ombretto 030 di MWW4U, ovvero quello che Trucco Minerale-Neve Cosmetics chiama Galassia, è un incredibilmente intenso blu-viola che diventa un ancora più incredibile blu ghiaccio se applicato su base nera (nello swatch ho usato il Fluidline in Blacktrack di MAC). Non è certamente un colore semplice da portare per chi è abituato a tinte soft, ma piacerà sicuramente a chi ha un’animo un po’ dark o semplicemente a chi non ha paura di osare con il trucco occhi.

Per ora è tutto. E’ una piccola collezione, ma ne amo ogni singola sfumatura tranne, per i motivi che avete letto e soprattutto visto, Violet Trance di MAC.
Se dovessi suggerirvene un paio direi Satellite Dreams e Indian Ink, entrambi di MAC, ma questo secondo il mio gusto personale. So che Parfait Amour è molto più gettonato di Satellite Dreams: trovo però che quest’ultimo, essendo un punto di viola intermedio fra i freddi e i caldi, stia meglio ad un numero maggior di carnagioni e a tutti i colori degli occhi. Un buon compromesso (e una soluzione più economica) è il viola della palette The Original di Sleek, che definirei come il figlio ideale di Parfait Amour e Satellite Dreams. Oltre a ciò, per un prezzo inferiore a quello di un singolo ombretto MAC (sia in refill che in confezione mono), avrete altri 11 bei colori con cui divertirvi. Come colore scuro ho scelto Indian Ink: so che Make Up For Ever fa un bellissimo viola che ho già puntato, ma al momento non ce l’ho, quindi il vincitore è Indian Ink in quanto, come ho detto prima, si abbina perfettamente a tutti i viola che possiedo.
